Kia unveils new EV3 and EV4 concepts with eye towards sustainability

Kia's latest concept vehicles, the EV3 and EV4, are a testament to the Korean automaker's commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly mobility solutions. Unveiled on October 12, 2023, the designs feature cutting-edge sustainable materials and methodologies that are set to revolutionize the industry.

The Color, Materials, Finish (CMF) design team drew inspiration from natural elements to create the stunning interiors of the EV3 and EV4. The EV3 boasts an airy ambiance with a transparent and light-filled design, while the EV4 pays homage to the Earth with earthy hues and shades derived purely from nature.

Natural fibers in the seats

One of the most significant innovations in the EV3 is the use of natural fibers for its seats. Utilizing this material not only offers a lighter and slimmer seat design, but also reduces waste, increases efficiency and enhances aesthetics in calming earthy shades. Additionally, the seat covers used 3D Knit technology, a unique technique that adds visual appeal while minimizing the need for stitching.

But perhaps the most extraordinary component in the EV3 is its console table, which is made entirely using Mycelium, a sustainable material extracted from mushroom roots. This unique material offers both strength and a plush texture, making it an ideal component for sustainable car designs. Marília Biill, Head of CMF Design at Kia, highlights the company's commitment to bio-fabrication, citing their efforts to cultivate materials that are in harmony with nature.

In comparison, the EV4's interiors are designed to be uniquely dyed using madder roots and walnut shells on 100% recycled cotton. The handwoven fabric stripes give the dashboard a 3D appearance similar to the EV3's seat covers. The console table in the EV4 features hemp fibers, an adaptable and sustainable material with exceptional properties, enriching it with a deep color.

Sustainable in every way

Kia's quest for eco-friendly solutions has a solid foundation in integrating environmentally conscious materials into their vehicles. The Soul EV from 2014 utilized bioplastic and sugar cane bio-fibers, setting the tone for future eco-friendly cars. Kia took this commitment to the next level with the debut of the EV9, incorporating ten sustainable components into every new line of their vehicles. These components include bioplastics derived from vegetable oils and corn extracts and Bio Polyurethane as an alternative to leather.

Kia's steadfast commitment to sustainable solutions has a lofty target, achieving complete carbon neutrality across all operations by 2045. The automaker remains at the forefront of green innovations, pledging to continue finding ways to reduce their carbon footprint while making mobility solutions that are every bit as practical as they are beautiful.
